Sussex Ornithological Society is organising a breeding Nightjar survey for 2023. The last full county-wide survey was carried out in 2004. Because of the specialist habitat requirements and their nocturnal behaviour, Nightjars are not well covered by annual monitoring schemes such as the BTO Breeding Bird Survey.
Selection of 1km squares is based on records of churring Nightjars over the last 10 years and those selected for the previous surveys in 2004. To get started, view the county map to see the available survey squares.
